SEASON RECAP SO FAR…

As our second season has eclipsed the three game mark, the Field of Dreamers emerge from one of the longest winters groggy, strike-weary, and sombre…but ready for the summer season to bring us the joy of making baseball. Trinity Bellwoods remains a place where dogs chase their leashes in the outfield, where frisbees fly in the night’s sky, where house music from the 90s thumps like a soundtrack to an underground rave – but also where a small piece of our hearts are laid down each week as we build community.

As teams still get used to their new formations, the Humber River Humdingers and Rouge River Blush have provided us with some clear moves towards pun-worthy mashups, while the league awaits the final names for the great Credit and Don River franchises.

But let’s not forget that there have been games played!

CREDIT RIVER

In the first three weeks Credit River looks to be a potential top dog winning all three of their games and playing some spirited ball!  Yogi Acharya currently leads the league with 15 ABs and has been the sparkplug for the Credit squad that features such oldtimey vets as LJ Robinson and Johann Juarez and some friendly rookies like Jill Aoki-Barrett and Tanis Franco.  Can they hold on to this advantage or will they have to incur some debt with all their Credit?  Credit River starts the season 3-0-0 (3 wins, 0 losses, 0 ties)

DON RIVER

Don River’s season so far has been a roller coaster ride! In the first game against the Humdingers, down by 7 in the final inning, the Don squad played a game of pass the baton tallying 13 runs to win in Week 1.  In week 2, the team was hushed by the potent Rouge River lineup, and in week 3, Don River dropped a nail biter to the Humber squad in their second match-up of the year despite playing some of the most stellar defence ever seen on the Dreamers’ diamond.  Special mention should go out to Janine Caster who players might be apt to call “Dyson” after she vacuumed up every ball hit to her at 3B and made an excellent catch on a Phillip Morgan special delivery at 1B.  The game despite the loss was a resounding success for the hard work of a team building on the two great early season skillshares. Don River starts the season 1-2-0 (1 win, 2 losses, 0 ties)

HUMBER RIVER

Like a game of Cranium at 2am on a bleary Saturday night, we are still not sure what a Humdinger is and whether or not our vocal chords are prepared to find out….but what we are sure of is that if any team thus far has represented the heart and soul of the league, it’s been Humber.  After two tough losses, the Humdingers are hmm…hmmm….hmmmmmm…..ing their way in to the win column, with an ecstatic display of agility, teamwork, and defensive genius.  Last week’s game was capped off by Colin Hastings beautiful slip and slide on the Humber glide double play and the barrage of hits off the bats of the Humber chorus…Robin Smillie, Alex Brant, Annelies Cooper, Brianna Greaves, Meg Wright, Karen Campbell, Ryan Hayes, Jo Jefferson, and Rachel Small all found ways to make the needle drop and pile up the hits as the power of the Hustle gave wave to the droning consistency of the Humdinger brand of ball.  Humber River starts the season 1-2-0 (1 win, 2 losses, 0 ties).

ROUGE RIVER

If any team will make you blush this summer, you’ll need to be watching the Rouge.  You may at first mistake these lovelies for fans of the great 1998 Jennifer Page song, Crush, or with this nationalistic rallying chant, but don’t be fooled! It’s not just a little crush, it’s a lot of blush! It’s not U-S-A, it’s B-L-U-S-H….and they’re Blush, hush, hush, hush, hush…..The Rouge River Blush have been bringing the Red Light Special  to the SkyDome for three straight weeks as they dropped two heartbreakers to the Credit River squad sandwiched in-between a love affair with home runs against the Dons.  Captained by the fabulous duo of Terrance and Merle, the team has embraced style, snacks, and the bugle as its official mascot. If you hear Lainie Basman or Sarah Weinberger trumpeting their team, you can have the delicious fried corn snack to thank! But on the ballfield Rouge is easy, breezy, and beautiful, as they use the power strokes of Andy Smith and Umar Saeed to combine with the electric speed of Jenny Chan, Rocio Velasquez, and more. Rouge River starts the season 1-2-0 (1 win, 2 losses, 0 ties).

AN ALMOST CYCLE

Phillip Morgan’s (DON RIVER) first game started with a single, double, triple, and then another single and despite this feat Phill’s first game did not get recorded in the books and so the rookie is still in search of a first extra base hit!

Strange But True

Through their first 77 at-bats Janine Caster (DON RIVER) and Karen Campbell (HUMBER RIVER) have been mirror images:

Janine Caster 77AB 46HITS  44SINGLES  2DOUBLES
Karen Campbell 77AB 46HITS  44SINGLES  2DOUBLES

At this point in their career, Alex Brant (HUMBER RIVER) and Robin Smillie (HUMBER RIVER) have posted nearly the exact same batting line:

Alex Brant 74AB  40HITS  39SINGLES 1DOUBLES
Robin Smillie 73AB 40HITS  38SINGLES 2DOUBLES

GAME RECAPS

As Rachel Small dug her foot in the batter’s box awaiting the call of “Let’s Make Baseball”, the player who started the season with the first ever at-bat in league history was the very same who tilted us into our inaugural playoffs.  On a muggy and wet evening that was perfectly suited to the gilled-guppies, the Trout went to work quickly in hopes of sinking the Hustle’s chances at a #1 hit.  Peter Demakos at short stop and Robyn Letson and Alex Brant at first base acquitted themselves in fine fashion with shimmering plays that sparkled more brightly than the iridescent scales of a sea of their namesakes migrating up a river.  And it was indeed a deep pool of water that got the Hustle doing The Swim.  Down by a score of 16-2, the dancing divas relied on the long-ball to bring some smoothness to the dance floor.  Natalia Saavedra, Andrew Norton, and Craig Fortier combined for six home runs and the Hustle played some groovy defence thanks to a heads up play at first by Jenny Chan, an excellent couple of plays by Katie German and Yogi Acharya in the middle infield and some heads up back up by Rocio Velasquez and Jo Jefferson. But just as Richard, Andrew, and Craig all stopped short of home in their attempts to expand the score, the come from behind was also cut short and the Trout swam into the Championship game.

In the second game of the evening, the Mastodons stomped out to an early lead thanks to some excellent team play that saw the mammoth mammoths play small ball advancing runners on singles and doubles and topping out with 14 runs in the first three innings.  This was highlighted by some key hits by Jennifer Mussell, Matt Poggi, Karen Campbell and Annelies Cooper that provided fodder on the basepaths for some timely hits off the bats of Terrance Luscombe, Ryan Hayes, and Noah Adams. The Ballsheviks, however, sought to bring equalization to the game and sparked too large rallies that tied the game at 18.  In the top half of the final inning, the loveable mammals were stopped by a militant defense and the Ballsheviks were able to squeak out a Soviet-style victory thanks to a 4 runs batted in night for Gita Madan and a timely home run from Andy Smith – who also made a stellar catch between short-stop and left field to end the inning.  The Ballsheviks move to the eastern front to take on the Trout in the finals as the Mastodons head to the early game to stomp out some hits against the super fly Hustle.

GAME RECAPS

The first regular season in Field of Dreamer’s history came to an end on a cool night under the Bellwoods lights. The people who began the season as a motley crew of outcasts on the diamonds of the city streamed onto the SkyDome field like seasoned pros.  They pulled bases from the bags and set up the field, they spread throughout the field playing catch, stretching and taking some swings, they dusted their jerseys and adjusted their caps and set out to finish this historic season – all of them with an eye on next week’s playoffs.

The early evening tilt featured the Hustle & Trout in a preview of the first ever post-season game in Field of Dreamer’s history. The Trout glistened in their powder blues as the Hustle shined in their flashy yellows as Niloofar Golkar dug in for the first at-bat, a base-hit to left field.  The fish were flying from the onset of the game and Niloo’s hit was followed by a series of swats that had the Trout sucking air through their gills as they rounded the bases!  The Hustle were in for a tough game as they reeled back on their dancing shoes and teetered to a 10-3 deficit.  The brilliant plays by the lovable Trout was contrasted to the flip flopping on the dance floor of the Hustle. Notably, Craig Fortier took a couple tumbles in the batter’s box and it seemed that perhaps the Hustle were going to spend the rest of the dance as wallflowers to the formidable fish.  The crowd of fans (mostly Don and Rouge River players) found it hard to watch the game as the gleamed at the newly minted “Ball-In-Cup” champion, Alex Brant stationed at first base.

However, in a moment of desperation, Richard Peters took Craig aside and explained that the problem was that his socks were on the wrong feet and that’s why the Hustle had gotten off to a bad start. And so it was that the player known as “bumble bee” striped down to his bare feet swapping his black and yellow striped hose onto opposite sides. The Hustle had triggered the first 8-run mercy limit and it was at this point that they began to get their footing, maxing out at 8 runs with some incredible runs by Yogi Acharya, Janine Caster, Andrew Norton, and some hands on guidance by Richard Peters.  The game quickly turned it’s tide back in favour of the Hustle, though both teams danced to the finish line with grace.  The final score of 19-12 doesn’t accurately reflect the nail-biting closeness and with another slow start against the Trout in the playoffs, the Hustle might finally lose the number spot on the Billboard charts. (Craig Fortier – Humber River)

On this same cool night in September with our Frisbee-throwing friends in the distance, the Ballsheviks hard-fought and won their last pre-playoffs coup. But they also found out, inning-by-inning, that the stomping Mastodons may be their revolutionary equals. The crowd sat at the edge of their seat not knowing the victor until the very last batter in. They witnessed some of the best-made baseball all season.

Six innings in total, riveting each in equal measure. The Ballsheviks started off hot with a 2 run lead. But the lovable giant beasts pump a lot of blood too so the game heated up even more: the Dons had a perfect 2nd inning to change their fate with 7 great hits, no outs and 5 runs, and the Ballsheviks pushed back with a back-to-back spectacle of out-of-the-park hits by Andrew Stokes and Jarl Gardner.

Then, the tide turned in the 3rd inning with a dreamy home run by Darren Puscas that brought 3 batters home, coupled with brilliant defense in the bottom of the 3rd that held back the Ballsheviks from scoring their max 5 putting the Mastodons 1 point ahead.

In the 4th a spectacular hit by Ryan Hayes sealed the fate of a third 5/5 score for the proboscideans that triggered the new and more equitable mercy rule giving the Ballsheviks the chance at catching up, which they did. But it wasn’t the rule that made the Ballsheviks turn their fate, it was their hard-hitting inning and awesome skills that scored them 7 runs putting the game at a nail-biting 16-15 score in their favour.

The 5th and 6th innings were gripping. “What’s the score?” asked a Ballshevik player. All the players looked toward their coach, Merle. “Does the score really matter, like, aren’t we here just to have fun?” replied Merle. The score was tied.

The Ballsheviks squeaked out a victory with their very last out. The last words of the night went to Jess Duarte who reassured the field her “teeth are still in” after a fielding mishap. But Ballsheviks beware, because the last words may have been prophetic: when both teams face off again in the playoffs next week, the Mastodons will show their teeth. (Jessica Duarte – Don River and Umar Saeed – Rouge River).

GAME RECAPS

On the penultimate week of the regular season, the Field of Dreamers took to SkyDome once again, this time on an unseasonably cool midsummer’s night. Directly proportionate to the drop in temperature was the number of Frisbee devotees, perhaps deserting Trinity Bellwoods in order to pack their bags full of camping gear and their pockets full of narcotics in preparation for the annual migration across the border to Burning Man.

The first game of the evening was a matchup between the league’s second and fourth place teams, the Rouge River Ballsheviks and the Credit River Rainbow Trout. There was nothing fishy about the quick start for the Trout, who scored three runs in the first inning, angling to sink their socialist counterparts in a feeding frenzy and tip the scales in their favour. But the Ballsheviks, perhaps luring their opponents into a false sense of security, responded proportionately and equitably by scoring three of their own. Fantastic infield defense for the Trout along with strong hits by LJ Robinson and Johann Juarez would not let their opponents off the hook easily. But as the game went on, the Ballsheviks stayed true to their founding principles, handing out ‘the soft’ – a number of smooth singles by Shelagh, Lainie and Nav – along with ‘the hard’ – some deep blasts to the dog dish below the hill by Jarl, Umar and Andrew. Merle’s 3 RBIs and Rachele’s amazing catch and subsequent stop, drop and roll helped extinguish the Trout on the evening by a score of 19-11 (Andy Smith – Rouge River).

In the late game, a substitute-heavy Humber River Hustle got down against the Don River Mastodons in front of a capacity crowd of seven. Batting first, the proboscideans nosed ahead to an early lead with a mammoth number of singles trumpeting their arrival to the field. Annelies stomped ahead to her first career double, while Darren’s three triples made the Hustle sweat like a fur-clad teen coming out of Comfort Zone on a Sunday afternoon. But the Hustle were able to tap into a groove and got into the swing of things, jazzing up the scoresheet with a Humber Riverdance of offensive power led by Richard’s two huge homers and Mike Yam’s perfect night at the plate. Excellent defense by Gita Madan and Janine Caster  meant the Hustle were the hot stuff of the night, winning by a score of 13-9. This game also featured more bruises than the mosh pit during and encore performance of “Colony of Birchmen” with batted balls to legs, faces and hands causing some (hopefully!) minor injuries. Heal well, Dreamers! (Andy Smith – Rouge River).

As a reminder, there are no scheduled games for Labour Day weekend. Instead, a celebration of sport and friendship is being planned at Dovercourt Park for the early evening of Sunday, September 3. If you’d like to help coordinate, please contact Merle by email.

GAME RECAPS

This week’s early match featured the charging Mastodons against the migrating Rainbow Trout and it was clear that a great collision was about to occur. The last game of the pre-eclipse 2017 era, the Field of Dreamer’s played under an usually sunny field as the last sweaty days of summer dripped with the sappy emotion of a Death Cab for Cutie song.  While the action on the field was filled with exciting plays, including Rachel Smalls over the head swings for base hits, in the stands, our weekly play-by-play announcer, Michael, stopped by to play a game he called “Five Innocent Questions” and though we only got through two of the five questions before a heroic 18-10 victory for the flapping fish, we did learn that: 1. Michael’s favourite city (outside of Toronto) is: Athens, Greece.  2. A meal that Micheal learned from his mother that he still makes to this day is: Potato Latkes. 3. Micheal is of Ukrainian descent and has been married a number of times. 4. The best part of Michael’s week is watching our ball games and yelling “Let’s Make Baseball!” – a phrase he is certain to have coined, confirming Umar & Jess’s suspicion from earlier in the season.

In the nighttime bill, the Humber River Hustle got some spot support from Dancing Deeve, Grooving Graeme, and Disco Darren as they went to work under the bright lights of SkyDome to face off with the “Only Dance Acceptable is Dance to Tune of Marching Band” Soviets who welcomed Comrade Ryan Hayes to bolster their Red Army. The Disco Divas played some stellar defence with Yogi Acharya notably snaring a Soviet Missile off the bat of the Jarl of Dufferinikov that left burn marks in his glove. While the Hustle got out to a good lead, the Ballsheviks gave them a red scare in the third inning with a powerful five run burst. But in the end, the Hustle brought some feel good levity to the austere communists and walked away with a 23-11 victory.
