By Annelies Cooper (Garrison)

On a sticky July Sunday, the Dreamers gathered under a waxing moon in Sagittarius with an optimistic outlook and a hope that the balls would be thrown in their favour that night, 3 of our rivers and one little creek converged at the Trinity Bellwoods Sky-Dome.

Would the Undead Don River run down the Garrison Glimmer with an apocalyptic outbreak of hits and runs? Would the signature Credit River Care Bear Stare give the Rouge Racoons a serious scare?

The Dreamer’s Tribune: On hitting 100 or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the game

By Navjeet Sidhu

Joe DiMaggio. Jackie Robinson. David Hasselhoff. Oprah. Nav.

What do these people all have in common?

Greatness.

Webster’s Dictionary defines greatness as: “the quality or state of being great (as in size, skill, achievement, or power)”.

It also defines “gratness” (which is what I initially typed in) as: “The word you’ve entered isn’t in the dictionary. Click on a spelling suggestion below or try again using the search bar above.”

Coincidence?

Many people said reaching 100 hits could not be done and that I should just quit. I will call these people “my mom”. Nevertheless, I persevered, remembering the wise words of Aristotle: “Never say never”….or was that Justin Bieber? I always mix up the two….

Even now, the skeptics and naysayers will accuse me of using “performance enhancing substances” to reach this milestone. Well if team spirit and camaraderie mixed with tetrahydrogestrinone is considered “performance enhancing” then I guess I am guilty!

All this to say I’ve been truly honored and grateful to play with some amazing and supportive teammates over the years, both in the FOD and the many iterations (ABL!) that came before it. And of course a shout out to Craig as well for sharing his infectious love and spirit for the game! See you on the slopes!

SECOND HALF BEGINS

The second half of the 2019 season began this Sunday with a perfect sunny evening that pushed a cool breeze from Lake Ontario over the field. Trinity Bellwoods’ finest frizbee players were playing some down temp deep house and the Field of Dreamers flooded the field in anticipation for the dog days of summer.

In the early match, the Don River Don of the Dead were hoping to call like their namesakes (The Zombies) to the other dugout “What’s your name? Who’s your daddy? Is he rich like me?” while the Credit River Care Bears were just really trying to give a quick moral lesson within their 11 minutes + commercial break. In the late match, the Garrison Creek Glimmer we preparing to explore the deep spaces of the cosmos while the Humber River Haze were trying to explore the deep sounds of Jimi Hendrix’s seminal album “Are You Experienced?”

If you wanna know the results…

Cedar is Free

Update: https://www.facebook.com/thetowerhamilton/photos/a.931793813514380/2882806205079788/?type=3&theater

——

Following the Field of Dreamers’ annual Pride night, the Coordinating Committee agreed to commit $100 of league funds as a donation to Cedar Hopperton’s legal defense.

For those who haven’t heard of Cedar, they’re a trans anarchist activist in Hamilton who’s been in jail since June 22. They were arrested for allegedly violating their parole conditions by taking part in defending LGBTQ2S folks from far-right agitators, who imposed themselves and their violent messages upon a Hamilton Pride event, and for criticizing police at a town hall following the event.

Other queers have been arrested as well. We encourage you to read more about the ongoing events in Cedar’s case – including their recent parole denial – here.

As a league made up of many people living on the margins, Cedar’s struggle against the cops and the impunity of violent bigots resonates. Their situation reveals much about the rise of the right and the continued mistreatment of queer, trans and 2-Spirit people at the hands of police. We think it’s important to express our solidarity with them in a concrete way.

If you would like to support the legal fund you can also transfer funds via e-transfer to Leah Henderson at: [email protected] question: what is this for? password: queerresistance

There is also a benefit concert happening on July 25th in Hamilton: http://www.thisainthollywood.ca/cms/index.php?option=com_ohanah&format=html&view=event&id=3247&Itemid=
