Statement on COVID-19 from 2020 Coordinating Committee

Dear Dreamers,

Thank you for your patience as we worked to get information from the City of Toronto with regard to their strategy for parks and facilities moving forward.

Earlier this week we received word from the City of Toronto that all parks will remain closed until at least June 28th, 2020. Meaning that we will lose at minimum the first 9 weeks of the season.  We will be receiving a partial refund for these weeks from the City of Toronto at some point in the near future (Craig will let folks know when we do).

As you might expect, there is a chance that restrictions are extended beyond the provisional June 28th deadline and so there is still a chance that we lose all of July, August, and/or the entire 2020 season.

Regardless of what happens, we are committed to forming our teams for 2020 and building those team spaces as pods of solidarity during and following isolation and physical distancing. Below you will find some information and ideas that the coordinating committee has to bring the magic of the field to you in multiple ways and some other technical details that you might want to know.

REFUNDS/LEAGUE FEES

Once we receive our partial refund for the 2020 season, the Coordinating Committee will update players on how much we got back and offer refunds to all players who have paid fees for the 2020 season (whatever percentage of the $2700 permit fee that works out)

We are still keeping in reserve funds for t-shirt printing (if and when our season happens), new equipment and first aid/sanitation supplies.

If you would prefer that the league keeps the refunded fees, we will set up a “solidarity fund” pot that can be used at the broader league’s discretion to fund particular individuals/groups in financial need, support front line workers, and/or political struggles emerging out of the pandemic.

If you feel as though you will need to withdraw from the league for the 2020 season, please let us know and we will refund you your fee and will offer your spot up to folks who are on the waiting list.

NEW HEALTH & SAFETY PROTOCOLS FOR 2020 SEASON

We will await word from the City of Toronto who will be instituting health and safety guidelines should parks open up after June 28th, 2020, however, we are calling on all of our various players with medical training, scientific backgrounds, and lived experience to send us advice and suggestions with regards to improve our sanitation and safety post-isolation.

At the minimum, we will institute:

  • New policies on shared equipment (including helmets, gloves, bats)
  • Hand sanitizer on site and in dugouts to clean equipment before/after use

We welcome all suggestions and continue to do research to get a sense of what might be feasible should the season start.

MUTUAL AID

We are going to work hard to create strong team environments that can act as another social space for you to reach out to teammates and league members for support, social time and organizing!

Each team will be clustered together with a unique team name/identity and an internal chat group to keep folks up to date.

VIDEOS & EVENTS

As baseball weather begins to emerge, members of the Field of Dreamers will begin to create YouTube videos that will help you develop specific skills, learn new rules, and train for the upcoming season!

Any and all videos from league members, subs, and friends of the league especially around baseball/fitness/training/movement work so that we can be physically engaged with each other at least on some Sunday nights!

We will also be rolling out weekly events during the Sunday 8pm-11pm time slots reserved for our league (beginning May 3rd) so if you wish to contribute to one of these, have suggestions, and/or want to be part of the planning please let us know!

Some ideas that have already been floated include:

  • Baseball themed movie night
  • Name that walk-up song trivia night
  • An insider’s look into Field of Dreamer history, stats
  • Oral History project on Field of Dreamers
  • Learn about the Toronto River’s project!
  • Scavenger Hunts
  • And more!

2019 Field of Dreamers Finals

#WeTheTrash Is the 2019 Slogan You Came For

The 2019 Grand Finale of the Field of Dreamer’s season was gifted a beautiful warm early autumn evening that provided a spectacular canopy for the final evening of the season. The stands were filled with friends, family, fans, and an assortment of Don River Don of the Dead Players who came out to boost the morale of the underdog teams and to perhaps stay late for some left over brain eating.

The Bronze medal matchup featured the shooting stars of the Garrison Creek Glimmer coming off a heartbreaking walk-off loss to the Rouge River Raccoons in the semi-finals and the Credit River Care Bears who surmounted the zombie apocalypse to secure their spot in the game. The Gold medal matchup featured the Humber River Haze who set fire to the Care Bears en route to securing their spot in the match and the Rouge River Raccoons who squeaked into the finals in walk-off fashion after a dominating regular season.

Would the Glimmer ride Halley’s Comet to the Bronze or would the Care Bears build a rainbow shield so illustrious that it completely changed the superstructure of the cosmos? Would the Haze use smoke and mirrors to confound the favoured Raccons or would Rouge River have a late night feast?

Playoffs 2019 – Round 2

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

Week 2 of the 2019 playoffs featured the purples and blues of the Don River Don of the Dead and the Credit River Care Bears ready to use their respective supernatural abilities to power their way into the bronze medal finals and keep their season alive for one more week. While the evening tilt placed the upstart Garrison Creek Glimmer against the powerhouse Rouge River Raccoons in a semi-final match that would determine who would go on to the Gold Medal game against the eerily-present Humber River Haze.

The pageantry of post-season ball was definitively present as a cohort of decorated cupcakes provided by Alie Hermanutz, Annelies Cooper, Robin Smillie, and Andy Smith flanked the 1st base stands and the deep baritone voice of Devin “420” Clancy rocked the mic for the first game’s play by play. Prior to the game, long-time vets Craig Fortier and Jenny Chan were thanked for their contributions to the league, with a card made by Victoria Barnett and Rachele Gottardi (and a special shout-out to Robyn Letson for bringing team-specific candy for the games!).

Would Don River’s army of the undead march past the cuddle Care Bears into the Bronze medal game or would the magical power of rainbows, unicorns, and collective care lead credit river to send the horde of zombies to their final resting place? Would the supersonic speed of the Garrison Creek Glimmer provide them with the supernova energy needed to blast into the finals or would the Rouge River Raccoons topple the Garrison dreams like a trash can rife with organics?

Playoffs 2019 – Round 1

THE MAGIC HAS BEGUN!

Week 1 of the first ever five-team playoff format pitted the stealthy zombies from the Don River Don of the Dead against the starstruck asteroids from the Garrison Creek Glimmer in a matchup to see who would get to square off against the pesky Raccoons of Rouge River in round 2. Meanwhile, the evening tilt featured the harried fog of the Humber River Haze facing the cuddly cuddlers of the Credit River Care Bears in a bout that would determine who would advance to the Gold Medal game in Week 3 and who would square off against the loser of Don vs. Garrison for a chance at the Bronze medal.

Would Don River finally achieve enough brain eating to out flank the Glimmer or would Garrison Creek show us just how wide the expanse of the universe really is and take the game into interstellar territory? Would the Humber River squad heat up and blaze their way to the Gold Medal matchup or would the Care Bears band together in a unified rainbow of victory?

2019 REGULAR SEASON COMES TO AN END!

The final weekend of the 2019 regular season was a festive one! With Merle hosting a pre-game hangout before they return to the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes and Garrison Creek Glimmerite Meg Wright hosting a game-time birthday hang, there was plenty of lovely people and memories to celebrate. The weather was perfect for ball with mild humidity and a cool breeze blowing out to the outfield.

There was only one last question to solve before the playoffs! Would the Humber River Haze or the Credit River Care Bears finish in 2nd place to claim home field advantage for the first round of the playoffs? It would take 2 whole games to solve this question.

In the opening game, the Credit River Care Bears hoped to outshine the Glimmer with rainbows, shamrocks, and lucky horseshoes, while Garrison Creek sought to get intergalactic in their warm up for the first round of the playoffs. In the evening matchup, the first place Rouge River Raccoons hoped to have a pre-playoff appetizer filled with smoky Haze, while the Humber River squad hoped to set off smoke signals to flag their arrival into the playoffs!
