Humber River Hungry Hippos (3-0-0)
The Hippos are off to a chomping start to the season. After sunning themselves with their bellies overturned for most of the first game, they stormed back across the savannah to snatch the pearls from the mouths of the Rouge River Bad N Rougee to win their opening match 11-5. Week 2 they faced off against the Divas of Don River and came away with a stunning 14-13 victory thanks to rookie Matías Contreras’ game winning home run! In game 3 Matías almost snatched a second consecutive game winning home run, but it was captain Terrance Luscombe who knocked in the winning run to topple the Good Griefers 21-20.
Rouge River Bad N Rougee (2-1-0)
Rain drops, drop tops, the Rouge River team were smokin’ a cookie in a hotbox in the first three weeks of the season with two dominant victories and a close battle in week 1. After dropping the first game of the season to the Hungry Hippos of Humber, the friendos of Rougee squeaked out a stunning 24-23 victory against the Credit River Riot in game 2 and then a dominant 22-12 win against the Don River Celine D’on team in week 3. Featuring a great mix of sluggers and speedsters, Rouge is looking to get back to its Championship ways in 2023.
Credit River Riot (0-2-0)
In the work “The Anarchy of Colored Girls Assembled in a Riotous Manner,” Saidiya Hartman writes “Esther Brown did not write a political tract on the refusal to be governed, or draft a plan for mutual aid or outline a memoir of her sexual adventures. A manifesto of the wayward: Own Nothing. Refuse the Given. Live on What you Need and No More. Get Ready to Be Free – was not found among the items in her case file.” And yet, like Esther Brown, the Credit River Riot seems attuned to the need to live with the tension between waywardness and beauty – between freedom and desire. And so, the Riot lost a heartbreaker in Week 1 to the Garrison Creek Good Griefers by a score of 18-16 when their last inning rally was snuffed out by a great defensive plan by Michelle Kidd and Darren Puscas. In Week 2 the riot hung in to the bitter end against the Bad N Rougee but feel just short once again losing 24-23. With an off week in Week 3, the Riot seems poised to regroup, re-emerge, and revolt in Week 4!
Don River Celine D’on (0-2-0)
Showing the “power of glove” early in the season has proven that “glove can move mountains”. The scrappy Don River team began the year with an off week where they stretched their vocal range and drank their honey lemon tea before embarking on an exhilarating debut against the Humber River Hungry Hippos in Week 2. It seemed like the first game would go Don, but just like Rose in the ending scene from Titanic, there was no room for the Celine D’on’s on the plank of wood and like Jack they sank into the ocean to a 14-13 loss. Hoping that it would all come back to them in Week 3, the D’ons put up quite a battle but in the end dropped that game 22-12 to the Bad N Rougee. They will vie for their first win of the season in Week 4!
Garrison Creek Good Griefers (1-1-0)
Like all processes of grief, the GGs have had a roller coaster of a season. In Week 1 they played stellar defense and sprayed the ball around the sandlot just enough to squeak past the Riot of Credit winning 18-16. Taking Week 2 off for some “me time”, they rested and relaxed, before jumping back into the fray with a fierce battle against the Hippos of Hungry Humber. When it looked like there was a chance to come away with a second win, it was snatched from them thanks to some great play by the Humber squad and they fell 21-20.
